Securing admission into elite medical colleges (King Edward, Rawalpindi Medical University) or top engineering institutes (NUST, FAST, GIKI) frequently comes down to fractions of a percentage. For Federal Board students who fall just short of closing merit cut-offs, FBISE's Marks Improvement Policy provides a legal, structured second chance.
In recent years, the Federal Board has revised its improvement regulations, expanding the attempt window and clarifying subject-wise re-appear provisions. This guide outlines everything you need to know before registering.
1. The Four-Year Eligibility Window & Attempt Rules
Under existing FBISE regulations:
- Four-Year Timeframe: A candidate who has passed SSC or HSSC is eligible to appear for improvement of marks or grades within a maximum duration of four (04) years from the date of declaration of their passing examination result.
- Higher Qualification Restriction: A candidate may NOT appear for marks improvement if they have already obtained a higher educational qualification (e.g., an HSSC graduate who has completed a 4-year BS or Bachelor degree is no longer eligible).
- Best Marks Protection (No Risk Policy): If a student attempts marks improvement and receives lower marks than their previous attempt, their earlier higher score is legally retained on the official transcript. You cannot lose marks by attempting improvement.
2. Permissible Categories for Improvement
Candidates can choose from four distinct options depending on where they lost marks:
- Subject-Wise Improvement: Candidates can select one, two, or more specific subjects across Part-I, Part-II, or both parts.
- Part-I Only: Improve all subjects of 9th or 11th Grade only.
- Part-II Only: Improve all subjects of 10th or 12th Grade only.
- Full Examination (Part-I & Part-II): Improve all subjects across both academic years.
If a student chooses to improve a science subject that includes a practical or Practical Based Assessment (PBA) component (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Computer Science), they must appear in both the theory and the PBA examination. Practical marks cannot be carried over independently.
3. Fee Schedule & Online Registration Steps
FBISE operates a 100% digital admission portal. Follow these four steps to register as an improvement candidate:
- Visit the FBISE Admission Portal: Navigate to
fbise.edu.pk/Admission_form-main.php. - Select Candidate Type: Choose "Ex/Private – Marks Improvement" and enter your previous 7-digit roll number, exam year, and session.
- Select Improvement Subjects: Check the specific subjects you intend to re-sit.
- Generate Automated Fee Challan: The system automatically calculates your examination fee. Fees can be paid instantly via 1Link, EasyPaisa, JazzCash, or at any designated HBL or Askari Bank branch.
4. 1st Annual vs. 2nd Annual: Which Should You Take?
The Federal Board now conducts two full examination cycles annually:
- 2nd Annual Examination (Autumn / October): Ideal for fresh graduates who received their 1st Annual result in August/September and want to boost marks quickly before Spring university admission intakes.
- 1st Annual Examination (Spring / April-May): Offers a longer 6-to-8 month study horizon, ideal for students taking a gap year to prepare concurrently for MDCAT or NUST (NET).
